This course examines the operation of Day Schools for Indigenous children by white settler Mennonites in Manitoba. If focuses on the day schools that were operated by Mennonites in Manitoba in the Indigenous communities of Pauingassi and Bloodvien First Nations. Designed for two students as an Independent Study, one student will focus on archival research and the other on qualitative interviews. The aim of this dual and intersecting research approach is twofold: to construct a historical narrative of Mennonite involvement in the day schools, and to critically examine the theological and socio-cultural norms that drove and justified the missionary work of Mennonites in Indigenous communities in Manitoba such as Pauingassi and Bloodvein.
