The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the Bible which, it is hoped, will help the student appreciate the richness of the text, but will also contribute to avoiding some of the most common pitfalls associated with the reading of Scripture. We will examine both the Old and the New Testaments with special consideration given to their historical background and their literary character. We will also endeavour to explore how such an old, complex, and diverse corpus of texts can be relevant for today and can continue to be, as generations of Christians have discovered over the centuries, a source of life, significance, and joy.
